Gentle/Peaceful Parenting

Here is some inspiration for "gentle parenting". Let's all learn to be a little gentler with our little ones. Wouldn't we want the same?

Essential Oils Guide For Children & Babies

Safe Essential Oils Guide For Children & Babies. Natural Medicine & Aromatherapy

My (short) background regarding EO's

Essential Oils...Sounds sketchy don't it?
I had been hearing about these essential oils and how awesome they are.....Another fad I thought. Didn't we already dispose of fake health rememdies like snake oil? Isn't the general public smart than that I thought?
So obviously I went in with alot of skepticism and low expectations. My mother wanted to send me a couple oils (doTERRA) so I said, "Sure, why not?" Free oils are cool. So I decided to give it a shot. Like I said, I didn't expect much but the results I got even after 1 use was amazing. Read on.
She sent me three oils at first: Serenity, Balance and Lavender. When my mother asked me what kind of oils I wanted, I said anything with calming properties.
So my journey began:
Like most new things, I become completely obsessed and must do as much research as I possibly can so that I can combat any nay-sayers and turn other people on to EO's
The following is what I found in regards to specifically children. I may post about adults at another time.
My personal journey is still going. I now have 5 oils and a great petal doTERRA diffuser. I use my oils and diffuser everyday on myself, my 2 year old and my husband. I can't wait to increase my collection and continue learning about this incredible miracle in a bottle!

Safe Essential Oil Use (For Kids & Babies)

  • Like all moms out there, all I want for my baby, is health, happiness, and the chance for my son to experience life to its fullest. And although essential oils are wonderful and in my opionion, magical, they must be used with caution.
  • Essential oils, no matter the quality or brand of the oil, are an extremely concentrated combination of multiple chemical constituents and therefore require a certain amount of safety when using them. This week we are going to learn about safe essential oil use with babies and children! EO's should be much more diluted for use with babies as compared to use with adults. With so many different types of one plant, it’s important to use the correct species of essential oil. To make this easier for you and to take out the guesswork, I have added the Latin names of the essential oils. All of the Latin names listed are the type of that essential oil that is deemed safe for use. When purchasing essential oils, be sure to note the Latin name of the essential oil you are purchasing, to make sure you are getting the right one. I'm not an avid "doTERRA" only user because I have not use other oils so I have nothing to compare them too. But with any oil, please make sure that it is pure and safe for use BEFORE you purchase.

Babies and Children should never ingest essential oils

Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and babies. Certain essential oils could be toxic if ingested. No essential oils should be given orally to children unless otherwise directed by your doctor. According to Robert Tisserand, Essential Oil Safety;
The majority of cases of essential oil poisoning involve accidents with young children, often between 1 and 3 years of age. Approximately 75% of cases in the USA are in children up to 6 years old.
If your child accidentally ingests some essential oils, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Call your general practitioner unless signs of poisoning are present, then you should immediately bring your child and the bottle that was consumed, to the nearest emergency room.

Dilution is very important for ALL essential oils

There is no exception in this category. No matter what brand you use, what essential oil it is, or how much you are using, it is not safe to use ANY essential oil neat (without a carrier oil or some other dilution material). ALL essential oils should be diluted for use with babies and children. It is also important to note that when adding essential oils to baths of children, they must first be diluted in a water soluble carrier, such as raw unfiltered honey or vegetable glycerin. Adding essential oils straight to bath water, without a carrier, runs you the risk of causing irritation to the skin. There are many applications for essential oils with babies and children, but they should be kept away from a child’s face. Essential oils should not be used in or around the nose in children. I often suggest massaging the feet with young babies rather than the chest and back, for the safest application of essential oils.

Slowly introduce one essential oil at a time

Allergies are no fun. When introducing essential oils to babies, you have to remember that you haven’t yet discovered the things they are allergic to. It’s important to introduce essential oils one at a time and sparingly, to both watch your baby for any sort of reaction and to allow your baby’s body to slowly become introduced to that essential oil. Do not introduce more than one essential oil in one day. If your baby is going to have a reaction to an essential oil they will likely show signs of a reaction in the first 15-30 minutes after inhalation or dermal application.

What age is safe to use what oils?

This is a question that has run through my mind so often in the last three years. Through all of my reading, I have found quite a bit of good information, but there is still very little known about the use of many essential oils on babies and children. It is best to use your judgment when choosing essential oils for your child.

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on babies 3+ months

It is not advised to use essential oils on babies less than 3 months of age because their skin is not mature yet and therefore more permeable and sensitive to essential oils. Unlike adults, newborns are also not as capable of dealing with adverse reactions to essential oils. There should be even more caution with premature babies, avoiding all essential oil use until they reach at least 3 months after their due date. This is just a general guideline and great care should be taken to research each essential oil’s maximum dermal use individually before use. The maximum recommended amount of essential oils used on babies 3+ months topically, should not exceed .2% of the recipe, or 1-2 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.
  • Chamomile, Roman and German (Anthemis nobilis, Matricaria rectutita)

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on children 10+ years

By this age, most of the essential oils are safe for topical use or diffusion for children, though you should always be sure to slowly introduce each oil individually, to be sure that there are no adverse reactions or allergies. Peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary essential oils are all avoided in younger children because they contain a chemical constituent that is unsafe.
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus maidenii, Eucalyptus plenissima, Eucalyptus kochii, Eucalyptus polybractea, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus autraliana, Eucalyptus phellandra, Eucalyptus smithii)

Thieves blends should be avoided in children under 10 years

All of the anti-germ type Thieves blends of essential oils contain eucalyptus, rosemary, clove, cinnamon bark, and lemon. The eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils should be avoided in children under ten years of age. The clove essential oil shouldn’t be used topically on children under 2 years of age. Cinnamon bark essential oil should be avoided for dermal use in all ages, as it is too irritating to the skin.

Lethal Ingredients in Vaccines

Lethal Ingredients In Vaccines!

Ingredients In These So-Called "Life-Saving" Vaccines

Source: https://mamanaturally.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/opting-out-of-the-vaccination/

Formaldehyde: Proven Human Carcinogen

This is one of the many vaccine ingredients found today! Formaldehyde
This is pure fact! No celebrity gossip, no media poison. This is pure science!
Formaldehyde: In short, methanal. This is used as a disinfectant and for preservation. It's most often used to preserve human remains. The most common place you will find this ingredient is in nail varnish and nail hardeners.
If you saw your child downing a bottle of nail polish, you would be calling poison cotrol ASAP! So it's safe to inject?
This ingredient is KNOWN to be a "human carcinogen" according to 2011 US National Toxicology Program.
Much like food being genetically made today, people are uninterested or uninformed about what EXACTLY they are putting into our bodies. We give the government too much credit! We say things like, "They wouldn't sell it if it were that bad for you." "The FDA approved it, so it must be okay." These are lies and we need to empower ourselves and be informed.

Aluminum: Let's get some toxicity!

Onto our next ingredient: Aluminum
In plain English: metal. Metal is being injected into little babies. Some toxicity has been traced to deposition in bone and the central nervous system. This can also cause osteopenia observed in premature babies or infants with growth retardation. This is not a safe chemical!!
Here is a great article about aluminum toxicity:
http://customers.hbci.com/~wenonah/hydro/al.htm

Thimerosal

Thiomersal: MERCURY POISON!

Thiomersal is in short: Mercury ethyl sodium salt.
Okay, anything that has MERCURY in it, should not be ingested or injected into our bodies. This one SHOULD be a no brainer.
In fact, it says to avoid contact with your skin AND inhalation. If this chemical is that toxic, WHY ARE WE INJECTING IT?
Another fact, it is so toxic that there has been several reported suicides and deaths by this drug.

It's a wrap!

I've only gone through 3 ingredients that are found in vaccinations and the research is appalling. How much longer will we subject ourselves (and our children) to deadly chemicals and toxins? Do your research! Don't rely on media and celebrity opinion. Search the truth. It's out there!

Lies to persuade us to vaccinate

My birth story 1-22-13

The birth of Harold Joseph Hulbert III

As a prerequisite: My plan was for a natural homebirth. But life doesn't care what your plan is. The following is what I remember from the almost 26 hours of labor. There are graphic pictures so be warned!

1/21/13 5am
I got up for the billionth time in my pregnancy to go pee in the middle of the night. It was normal, routine. I didn't think I would be in labor that day. I was actually beginning to think I would never go into labor! Well 5am rolled around and I started feeling contractions. Okay, nothing new, I thought. Better not get my hopes up. Well after an hour of constant contractions every five minutes I knew this was it. It had to be!

I woke Joe up and told him that I was in labor. He immediately went into action, preparing the house, fitting the tub. I called my midwife to tell her and she told me to call back when the contractions started getting longer and stronger. I called Joe's mom (as her and Joe's sister would be attending the birth) and told her that this was it! (I had also called my mother and sister to inform them)

1/21/13 6am-12pm
I went back to bed trying to sleep knowing I had a challenge ahead of me. Sleep didn't come again. Joe and I layed in bed for some time trying to rest and relax. Joe and I decided to walk to the store to help things along. It was nice to walk and take some pressure off my back. It was lovely outside, nice and cool. I picked up some apple chips and a protein shake. When we got back, Joe's mom had already arrived and was avidly cleaning and had brought over some fruit salad along with some other goodies. (She cleaned the kitchen and bathroom vigorously and then proceeded to rake the leaves outside) Hiddie (Joe's sister) arrived shortly after making a wonderful meal of alfredo, salad and cheese bread.

The next several hours kind of blurred together but I will try and pick it apart the best I can.

 1/21/13 5pm
The contractions were getting more intense towards 5pm when the midwives showed up. I had taken a couple showers to relieve the pressure I was feeling in my back. It was nice! I was needing to remind myself to breathe and relax. I would moan and that seemed to help me release what I was feeling. The birthing tub was ready by around 6-7. By that time I was desperate to get in. The contractions were really intense now. The midwife checked me telling me I was about 7 cm dilated. Thank God!

I got into the tub and it felt amazing! The warm water was really helpful and I stayed in there for four hours. By that time, I was feeling overheated so the midwife suggested we go to the bedroom for a bit because I would be read to start pushing soon.

1/22/13 12am
I was getting pretty overwhelmed by the contractions, trying to ride them out the best that I could. I layed in bed for some time just feeling the waves and letting them drive me closer and closer to pushing. One of my midwives got my attention and told me I needed to focus! I was starting to fade in and out completely being overwhelmed by what was going on. I knew it was time to put my game face on. I got on the bed and they taught me how to push correctly. I pushed for quite a bit moving from the bed, to the floor, to the toilet. At around 5:30am my water broke. There was alot of meconium and my midwives were starting to get concerned. The baby's heartbeat was a bit erratic and he wasn't recovering well. By this point, I was exhausted. I tried with all my might to push that baby out and I wasn't progressing quickly enough. It was time to intervene.

It was a mad dash to the hospital. As Hiddie scraped the ice off her windshield, I was rushed out in my robe and oxygen on my face. Thankfully, I live 5 minutes away from the hospital so it was not so bad. The hardest part was not pushing in the car. It was difficult fighting my body's urges as the baby was crowning. We got to the hospital and about ten minutes later the doctor showed up. He said hello, good morning and informed the nurse that he was going to get some coffee. He left the room and the nurse called him back in within seconds telling him this baby was coming now! Everything went pretty smoothly after that. His head had molded quite a bit and the hardest part was getting past his ears. After the ears, all of him came out with one big push. I pushed and pushed (no drugs, no interventions) and finally at 6:50am on 1/22/13 my precious boy came into the world. As they layed him up on my chest, I couldn't believe he was finally here. I was blown away by how big he was and how alert he was from the get go.

Thanks to:

Joe, my incredible rock throughout this whole experience. He was solid and never let me doubt myself.

Paula & Deb: The knowledge and experience I needed to make the right choice to go to the hospital. I couldn't have done what I did without them

Tina: Her loving hands on me while I was riding the waves. She never tired or stopped and was an incredible support

Hiddie: Her upbeat attitude rocked me. She always had something right to say to lift my spirits up. She made me dinner (although I later threw it up) and took care of me even though she is 15 weeks pregnant herself.

I had an incredible team of support and love surrounding me throughout the entire process. I'm so thankful for this experience even though it wasn't my ideal plan. My baby boy was worth it all!
